RF14mm f/1.4L VCM - RF Lens World

RF14mm f/1.4L VCM

This is the latest in Canon's series of large-aperture, single-focus lenses that handles everything from still photos to videos, pioneering a new era of imaging. The 14mm focal length offers imaging quality that far exceeds human vision. It is ideal for capturing sharp pictures of a starry sky, and also excels in confined spaces or when photographing architecture at short range. With its f/1.4 aperture fully open, it can deliver a rich, expansive bokeh effects despite the ultra-wide angle, while also providing sharp definition in the peak focal range.

The RF14mm f/1.4L VCM features an optical system that can reproduce sharp, pinpoint images even with a fully open aperture, to optimise performance when photographing stars and nightscapes. It incorporates one fluorite element — a first for a Canon ultra-wide-angle lens — along with one UD lens and glass-moulded (GMo) aspherical lens elements. The GMo aspherical lenses suppress spherical aberration and curvature of field, to deliver high image quality across the entire picture. It also employs a Blue Spectrum Refractive (BR) optical element, which has anomalous dispersion properties that significantly refract blue light in the short wavelength range to provide excellent chromatic aberration correction. The lenses employ Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) and Air Sphere Coating (ASC), to suppress the likelihood of lens flare or ghosting.

The RF f/1.4L VCM series offers uniquely quick and quiet focus using a rear-focus system with a Voice Coil Motor (VCM) to swiftly and linearly drive the heavy focal lens. When used with an EOS R series camera, it delivers high-speed, responsive AF capability for still photography. When shooting videos, it offers remarkable quietness, enabling smooth tracking of a subject in motion, and touch focus operations.

The exterior of the camera features the same maximum diameter design*1 as other f/1.4L VCM lenses, such as the RF35mm f/1.4L VCM. The optical design employs electronic distortion compensation and a lightweight structure that limits weight to just 578g (approx.). It nevertheless offers a maximum aperture of f/1.4 — two stops brighter than the EF14mm f/2.8L II USM (which weighs approximately 645g). By successfully developing a 14mm lens with an f/1.4 aperture, RF14mm f/1.4L VCM has opened up a world of unprecedented ultra-wide-angle photographic possibilities.

*1 The RF14mm f/1.4L VCM differs from the RF20mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm F1.4 L VCM in the design of its integrated lens hood section and its overall length.
