Canon Continues Efforts to Restore Thai Coastal Ecosystem
with its 37th Canon Volunteer Activity
Volunteer staff planted 1,000 mangrove trees and released crabs into the sea at Khlong Khon Mangrove Forest Conservation Center in Samut Songkhram.
Canon Marketing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. organized its 37th Canon Volunteer activity, led by Mr. Hiroshi Yokota, President and Chief Executive Officer, and Mr. Phongthep Prasertvoranun, Director of Corporate Communications and CSR. A total of 85 volunteers, including employees from the Canon Group in Thailand and partner companies, participated in nature restoration activities at the Khlong Khon Mangrove Forest Conservation Center in Samut Songkhram province. The volunteers engaged in planting mangrove forests and releasing sea crabs, collecting non-biodegradable waste. The group also donated upcycled tables repurposed from leftover wooden shipping pallets. These efforts aim to support the sustainable preservation of nature.
Mr. Phongthep Prasertvoranun, Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Canon Marketing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. said "Canon Volunteer is our ongoing CSR effort to uplift society and protect the environment. For the 37th edition, we focused on the urgent need for the mangrove forests in Samut Songkhram, which have suffered from encroachment. Our volunteers contributed to forest restoration, planting 1,000 mangrove and Avicennia marina trees to improve aquatic habitat, prevent coastal erosion, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 13,750 tons. Additionally, we released 360 sea crabs, indicators of a healthy mangrove ecosystem. These crabs contribute to nutrient and oxygen circulation in the soil, benefiting the overall ecosystem. We also collected 93 kilograms of non-biodegradable waste, such as plastic waste, glass bottles, and plastic foam, for proper recycling. We also repurposed 144 kilograms of leftover wood pallets into 12 tables to be used at the Khlong Khon Mangrove Forest Conservation Center.”
The Mangrove Forest in Samut Songkhram’s Khlong Khon District is a habitat for various species, including terrestrial animals, aerial animals, and aquatic animals, all vital to the ecosystem and the local economy. "The awareness raising campaigns by community members, public agencies, and the private sector were inspired by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who paid multiple visits to mangrove forests and planted the mangroves herself," concluded Mr. Phongthep.
Canon aims to help rejuvenate the mangrove forest, a crucial habitat and nursery for aquatic life that boosts biodiversity. This reflects Canon's dedication to promoting environmental awareness and doing its part to restore nature, aligning with the company’s Kyosei philosophy of 'living and working together for the common good.'
